About Counselling

Counselling is a talking therapy. The terms ‘talking treatment’ or ‘talking therapy’ or ‘psychological therapy’ have the same meaning and all cover treatments that you may know as psychotherapy, counselling and therapy. Talking therapy sessions can take many different forms, depending on your needs, the type of therapy you have and where or how that therapy is delivered we can offer face-to-face or online counselling to best suit your needs.


Generally, counselling deals with issues in the here and now and psychotherapy deals with issues from the past that are likely to be deeply embedded, however, things are rarely as straightforward as that and there is often a lot of overlap.


Our counsellors aim to provide time and space for you to discuss what you want and need to work on, the only agenda we follow is yours. They may go through specific exercises designed to help you with the problem you're experiencing. Or you might have more general discussions about how you're feeling.


What you talk about will vary depending on the problem you want help with and the type of therapy you are getting. It could include:


  • your relationships

  • your childhood

  • your emotions

  • your thoughts

  • your behaviour

  • situations or events you find difficult


The First Session - Normally the most daunting one!


  • Introduction to each other to meet

  • An assessment to cover how counselling could be of benefit to you, 

  • Practical Details such as what happens if you miss a session, when and where the sessions will take place

  • Limits of confidentiality


In this first session, I will do a lot of talking at first just to get everything covered and may take notes, subsequent sessions will be focused on what you would like to bring to the session. 

Way of Working

Something brought you here today, it may have been on the suggestion of a friend, family member or loved one. Your GP may have suggested it as a supplement to treatment. You might have questions or just feel you don't know which direction you need to go in. 


I may be able to help walk your path with you. From a young age, I was told how much people felt I was there for them how they knew I really listened to them. I was drawn towards trying to help and support others that may have gone through similar traumas to myself. To help make their journey easier to bear. When I was given the chance to re-train I found I was drawn to counselling. I am down to earth and take my role as a counsellor seriously. But…. I also know how to laugh with you, and share not only sadness but those amazing moments in your life.


So, if you are needing to find some space to talk to someone, or are feeling overwhelmed or anxious in a way that is making life difficult to deal with, then please contact me. 

The first session is very much about exploring exactly what you would like to get from the counselling journey. What your goals are; what you want to change; what patterns get in the way and we can look at strategies that enable you to feel resilient and able to make decisions that will work for you, and if you are not sure then that is absolutely fine, I can help you see what paths might suit you.


You are the expert in your world, no one else has experienced everything you have done and I will work with you to find a way for you to find your path for the future.
